If You Could Talk To The Animals:
Animal Trainer Beatrice Lydecker On
Non-Verbal Communication With Pets

Ever wish you knew what your dog or cat was
thinking?

Beatrice Lydecker believes there’s no reason why you can’t gain new insights into the inner workings of your pet’s mind, by taking the time to see the world through his or her eyes and working to communicate with your pet on a nonverbal level. A nationally known animal trainer and author, who’s been a frequent guest on The David Letterman Show, Oprah Winfrey and Good Morning America, Lydecker claims that all of us have the ability to convey images and feelings to our dogs
and cats without using words.

Lydecker calls this ability visualization, preferring to avoid terms like ESP, which
she feels has too much of a “magic” image. There’s nothing mysterious about
what she does with animals, says Lydecker. Communicating nonverbally with a
dog, cat or other animal is just a matter of relaxing your mind, and letting the
feelings and images flow between you and your pet.

While you may not agree with Lydecker’s theory, she raises some intriguing questions about the nature of pets and their relationship with people. This is one reason why she’s been such a popular guest on the talk show circuit. Along the way, she has also been called to consult with many celebrity pet owners, including Jay Leno, William Shatner and Elizabeth Taylor.

Lydecker, who shares her Oregon home with 11 dogs and 4 cats, recently spoke to us about communicating with pets, and her new video, You Too Can Talk With The Animals. Here are some of her observations:

On Nonverbal Communication

“All of us are born with the ability to communicate mind-to-mind nonverbally. This is a natural part of life. Animals do it all the time. People tend to lose this ability as they ‘grow up,’ because nonverbal communication isn’t accepted in today’s society. What I do is help people learn how to use this nonverbal ability with their pets. People are thrilled to be able to communicate nonverbally with their
pets -- it’s like you’ve had this good friend, and now you can talk to him or her on a whole new level.

“There’s nothing mystical about this communication. It’s really something that is very natural. Of course, in order to achieve this kind of communication, you have to be sensitive to the world of animals. You must accept your pet as an animal, and value it on that level alone, and not see it just as an extension of you. This respect is the first step toward communication.”

Responding To Animals

“I translate what the dog, cat, horse or other animal feels. If he feels pain, I can feel it in me where he hurts. For example, I once consulted with a veterinarian who had a dog who was shaking his head for no apparent reason. I learned from the dog that his left ear hurt. I then told this to the vet and, sure enough, he found an infection in the left ear. This wasn’t magic, it was just being sensitive to the
feelings of the animal.”

Differences Among Animals

“I believe that different species of animals have very similar thought processes. All of the animals have one line of thinking. They don’t think of things in human terms, but in their own animal terms.

“Just like you and I do, our pets will spend a lot of time thinking about the things that are important in their day-to-day lives. They’ll think about other animals and their rivalries or friendships with them, they’ll think about pleasing their owners, they’ll think about people they like and people they miss.

“I think that some animals tend to spend a lot of time thinking about the past, missing people they knew and places they’ve been. This is especially true of horses.

“Horses are complex, but I believe that dogs are the animals that are most likely to have psychological conflicts, because they’re the animals that are most dependent on people. They also have the most complicated relationship with
people, because of their pack mentality.”

Celebrity Pets

“The pets of famous people are no different than the pets of anyone else. To the dog or cat, the famous person is just a friend, not a celebrity. In 1986, I was invited to work with the Elizabeth Taylor’s Pekingese, parrot and Burmese cat.  They were filled with love for her. She wasn’t a star actress to them, she was part of their family.

“Of course, celebrity pets can have the same problems that other pets do. For example, I was called in to help Yul Brynner’s Shar-pei, who seemed to be going through a tough time in his life. I got to know this dog, and it turned out that his stomach was upset from traveling all the time, and drinking so much foreign water.”

Benefits To Owners

“As the experience of Yul Brynner’s dog illustrates, being able to communicate nonverbally with your pet offers very real benefits to you and the animal. When you take the time to see the world through your pet’s point of view, you’ll be better able to learn about what he likes and dislikes. And, you’ll also have a better chance of changing your pet’s behavior.”
